Public lecture on numerical analysis of urban ground work

Jinhyun Choo delivered a public lecture in a workshop organized by the Korea Association of Underground Safety on 25 September 2019. The subject of the workshop was the numerical analysis of underground behavior during urban ground work such as excavation and tunneling, which is receiving increasing attention in South Korea due to a recently enacted law on underground safety management.

Dr. Choo lectured on the theory, verification, and importance of coupled hydro-mechanical modeling of geotechnical problems, emphasizing the two-way coupled nature of groundwater seepage and ground deformation. Two-way coupled hydro-mechanical analysis is believed to play a critical role in the mitigation of construction-induced geologic hazards in urban areas such as sinkholes.
